GRIFFEY: He was pushed into retirement

In our world of 24-hour instant media, the competition is fierce. So fierce that at times media members are forced to make choices. To print or not to print, that is the question.

When it comes to criminal acts, political failures and natural disasters the pot is full and the airwaves and pages fill easily. They should due to the fact that they are truly news and the people have a right to know. In sports however, when your team is down and the wins aren’t coming, digestible news is harder to come by.

A hero naps (maybe),

GRIFFEY: Everyone needs a nap now and then

Lately I have seen lots of chatter about Ken Griffey’s nap and how he shouldn’t have, etc. How often do you get so beat up by this recession that you simply can’t keep your eyes open? My job is no different than many others, but can you imagine how it must feel to be a Mariner lately? This was a year for high hopes. It hasn’t happened.

Griffey brought lots of excitement to this region once. If he really did sit down and fall asleep during a game, I really don’t care much. Did anyone really think by bringing him

MARINERS: Leave player management to team

Since when have Larry LaRue, John McGrath and now “The Nose” been hired to take over the player management for the Mariners? Why are they all making so much noise trying to get Ken Griffey Jr. fired? Do they have superior knowledge, privileged information or pure clairvoyant abilities that make their somewhat pompous remarks about getting rid of Junior the only thing to do?

I thought news writers were supposed to be purely objective and informative, not trying to take over others managerial responsibilities? Though I have never seen the wisdom of paying several million dollars for a “club

MARINERS: Let sleeping Griffey lie

Ken Griffey Jr. will be out of baseball soon enough. Stop trying to make news of something that isn’t news worthy. I appreciate standing up for each other, but The News Tribune needs to learn how to eat a little crow once in awhile. Bashing Griffey, Goldberg, Sweeney and the Mariners is not making it any easier.

Griffey is an icon like Santa Claus. Us baseball hero worshippers need to show Griffey a little grace and dignity for all the smiles he has brought. The Mariners are depressing enough with the lack of run production, that the only thing

GRIFFEY: Enough already!

Was Griffey napping? Wasn’t he napping? Anonymous #1 said this; Anonymous #2 said that…. His agent said this, then he said our editors did that —– on and on and on.

Enough articles that start out giving Griffey a left-handed compliment, then slinging him dig after dig. Enough references to him as a “geezer”, a “spare part”, etc. Enough staging his whole retirement scenario to the smallest detail. Enough, already.

Coming to reside in Tacoma only about 10 years ago, I never experienced the Ken Griffey Jr. legend years, but I have enjoyed his presence back in the Northwest

MARINERS: Junior’s glory days have passed him by

Re: “TNT trying to push Griffey off the team” (online letter, 5-13).

Though I no longer live in Washington, I’m still a big fan Seattle baseball and enjoy reading The News Tribune online every day. When I read the letter that accuses TNT sports writers of being disingenuous and trying to push Ken Griffey Jr. off the team, I almost spewed coffee all over my computer.

Sure, sportswriters do have some influence on the game. After all, they’re the ones who vote for the Hall of Fame candidates. But to think they have the clout to have Griffey “pushed

MARINERS: TNT trying to push Griffey off the team

It was with dismay that I have read the disingenuous efforts by three sports writers for The News Tribune to have Ken Griffey Jr. pushed off of the Mariner team.

It is unprofessional for these writers to base their stories on the testimony of “anonymous Mariners players.” These players have displayed their lack of committment to their team. The sports writers are using these anonymous players to vindicate their attacks on Ken.

True to form, Griffey is rising above the tactless attacks rather than sinking to the level of the writers.

MARINERS: Lay off of Ken Griffey Jr.

Re: News Tribunes articles on Ken Griffey Jr. sleeping during a game.

Quoting anonymous sources in a story is something that investigative journalists do to protect the lives of people who come forward with information that is important enough for them to risk everything, not something a sports journalist does to promote a story line.

Griffey is someone who is very important to Northwest sports. His style and spirit for the game inspire baseball fans all over the world, and that’s something that deserves more than a trash story backed up by anonymous sources.

I enjoy reading my
