MIDEAST: McCain wrong about abandoning Iraq

So now al-Qaida has taken over a hunk of Iraq – further proof that our meddling in the Middle East is the biggest mistake we ever made.

Despite all the American blood and money that was poured into Iraq and all the American money poured into Halliburton by Cheney/Bush, Iraq is still not a miniature U.S. Go figure. Nor Afghanistan. Nor will Iran ever be.

These people have been the way they are for centuries, a lot longer than we have been the way we are. And we have actually been the “way we are” for only the last 100

BENGHAZI: The truth about attack still not told

Now that John Brennan has been confirmed as CIA director by the Senate, it appears we may never learn the entire truth about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, or the apparent cover-up in the aftermath. Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham were going to hold up the confirmation until they received more information. It didn’t happen.

Neither former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta or Brennan provided much information. The Democrats spent their congressional time with Clinton praising her work at the State Department even though she had no knowledge of the lack

GOP: Senators show their hypocrisy

So Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham hold U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice responsible for misleading the American people about the Benghazi attack that led to four American deaths. The information about the terrorists was withheld because the government didn’t want them to know we were on to them.

Where were these two when Condoleezza Rice was purposely misleading (lying) about weapons of mass destruction that were supposedly in the desert and the reason behind going to war in Iraq that cost thousands of American lives?

Don’t GOP leaders realize how silly they look? Do they wish to destroy their party

ELECTION: Revisiting TNT’s 2008 endorsement of Obama

After reading The News Tribune editorial board’s 2012 presidential endorsement of Barack Obama (editorial, 10-24), I thought it would be interesting to review their previous endorsement of Obama in 2008. Though not surprised by either endorsement, I was curious how well Obama’s accomplishments of the past four years fit with the board’s hope for his presidency at that time.

The 2008 endorsement indicated that the presidential election was in part a referendum on George W. Bush’s presidency which “ran up an unbelievable deficit” as well as a referendum on who would be best to “improve the lives of average

SHIPPING: Keep using American vessels

Re: “Plan to toss shipping act?” (TNT, 6-29).

Sen. John McCain wants to let foreign ships carry goods between U.S. ports.

Trickle-down economics means American workers lose jobs. The American shipbuilders and shipping crews make American salaries and profits that they spend in the United States.

McCain cites a reduced cost for agricultural products shipped to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. I am sure there are foreign shippers that pay a pittance to their crews and have poor safety regulations that could reduce the cost to the agribusinesses.

The foreign shippers will spend their money in their country, and America
