PAID LEAVE: Abuse is rampant

We have all heard about government employees drawing full pay while on administrative leave after it was determined that they were no longer capable of performing their prescribed duties – in some cases for a year or more. And while such leave might be justified in a small number of cases, the system is often abused, thanks in large part to the power of public employee unions. Two cases are glaring examples.

Lois Lerner, who was is in charge of the Internal Revenue Service, is now on paid administrative leave to the tune of a $170,000 yearly salary. She refused

INCOME TAX: Pro and con of the 16th Amendment

Pro: Scandals overtaking the IRS are an indication of an out-of-control bureaucracy. The founders believed that levying direct taxes would be a threat to liberty. They therefore strictly limited such taxes. The 16th Amendment was necessary to implement the income tax. The result of this was the creation of a bureaucracy too big to control.

The behavior of the IRS is disaster for representative government and free elections. The IRS attacked the grass-roots groups but let the super PACs run amok. The founders were right: Repeal the 16th Amendment or face tyranny!

Con: To repeal the 16th Amendment is to

OBAMA: Leftist policies collide with reality

On May 3, Tacoma hosted Tamrat Layne to speak at the 35th annual Pierce County Prayer breakfast. Layne was the past communist prime minister of Ethiopia. Almost 1,800 people came to hear him speak.

Among other things, Layne said one thing very striking during his talk: that all of the leftist books that he had read and concepts that he had learned became rubbish when dealing with the reality of actually running a nation.

Unfortunately, after five years of leadership, President Obama is learning the same things as Layne. Spending trillions on pork barrel projects only caused growth until the

OBAMA: President isn’t up to demands of the job

President Obama is the CEO of the federal government. Successful new CEOs always streamline their businesses – to be more nimble, efficient and profitable and to improve the productivity of their workforce. Obama does the opposite; he enlarges the government and hires more (but less competent) workers whose purposes are to serve the president rather than the public. This is socialism, which has never worked or served the ordinary citizens (only the elite).

The results are dire. The job is too large and complicated for this president. He recently used his primary skill (teleprompter rhetoric) in an hour-long, boring foreign

HEALTH CARE: Gerson blames the wrong party

Re: “The IRS scandal you don’t hear about: The Obamacare power grab” (Michael Gerson column, 5-26).

In a fit of frustration, Gerson has, at least temporarily, given up making direct attacks on Obamacare and, instead, taken the path of least resistance, blaming the IRS for its shortcomings – unintentionally reminding us that so much of what we dislike in our society could also be laid at the feet of the IRS.

In a way, I’m sympathetic with Gerson. The Affordable Care Act is, indeed, overly complex and costly. But the blame should be placed on Congress, not the IRS.

GOVERNMENT: ‘Hope and change’ is now ‘duck and cover’

The Obama administration is under scrutiny for a variety of scandals. There are many questions about the tragedy in Benghazi, the intrusion of phone records by the Justice Department into the Associated Press and the incredible issue with the IRS targeting conservative groups for opposing political views.

We’ve all seen the news and the “official” response.” Jay Carney, the press secretary of the White House, tolls the line: “We didn’t know” or “The president was not aware” or “We are investigating this issue.” This is unacceptable to the American people. We all want to know if the leaders in our

OBAMA: Scandals show president’s incompetency

How much more will the American people take of the corrupt and incompetent Obama administration? We’ve had the Fast and Furious guns to Mexicans issue, the Benghazi cover-up, the IRS “I know nothing” folks and and now the seizing of news media phone records.

Stifling First Amendment guarantees seems to be the modus operandi of the thuggish, Chicago- style, Obama administration. I’ve had enough. Now that the media has had its ox gored, I suggest it is time for impeachment!

MEDIA: Finally a reason for outrage

When the Benghazi story broke, there was so little coverage of it you would think it was an everyday occurrence. So what if four Americans were killed and the government lied about what happened?

When we found out about the abuses of the IRS, it also was a non-story. After all, it only targeted major donors to the Romney campaign, the tea party, and some evil Christian groups. What’s the big deal? They are all just a bunch of right-wing nuts.

But hold your horses: The government was then caught spying on the keepers of the truth, the American press.
