ELECTION: Republicans don’t have a clue

The Republicans are in a feeding frenzy over who to blame for the losses of the Nov. 6 election. Some Republicans are targeting Hispanics and want to “change their message to them.”

These Republicans need to view “illegal immigrants” as decent, hard-working human beings who deserve respect. They need to care about their needs instead of looking at them as “numbers” for the next election.

Republicans don’t understand what most Americans care about: jobs, education for their children, health care and women’s right to control their own bodies. Until Republicans decide to work on solutions to our real problems, instead

IMMIGRATION: Center takes toll on families

Re: “Center of Detention” series.

It was about a year and a half ago that I visited a “detainee” at that infamous place down on the Tideflats. I remember wishing at the time that such colossal evil, such gross inhumanity, should be exposed for all the world to see.

And now, this exposé appears in The News Tribune. I read every word, and as I read there welled up in me a terrible rage against all the power brokers and government agencies involved in that entire system with their blatant disregard for law, their lies, their rampant corruption –

IMMIGRATION: Series should affect public policy

Congratulations to The News Tribune on publishing a fine series, “Center of detention,” and giving it the space it deserves. There are many conclusions one can draw from reading it beginning to end.
One I draw concerns our government’s trend toward privatization.

Many “small” businesses look for ways to help themselves from the public coffers, like Correctional Services Corp. does. Maybe that’s good entrepreneurship, but when that business’ eye on its bottom line starts affecting public policy, that’s where taxpayers should scream foul.

Currently, taxpayers are paying for lengthy incarceration of people who are not a threat to

IMMIGRATION: Series trying to win sympathy?

Re: “Center of detention” series.

Obviously much effort went into compiling these pages of what may well be basically an infomercial attempting to garner sympathy for a segment of immigrants while still ignoring that simple word “illegal.”

In fact on Sunday, an immigration lawyer says, “Illegal can mean different things.”

Pardon me? The article continues: “Of the 396,006 people deported nationally last year, only 1,119 had homicide convictions.”

Is that really supposed to make us feel better? What about the other nearly 400,000 who simply entered the system by getting caught in for a “minor infraction”? Further, how

TACOMA: Broken immigration system needs reform

Thanks to Lewis Kamb and The News Tribune for the outstanding article, “Center of Detention” (TNT, 9-9). The Northwest Detention Center is a key piece of a much larger immigration picture, and its presence has profound implications for our city.

Rarely have I seen an article provide the depth and breadth of coverage seen here, and I eagerly await the rest of the series. My hope is that your coverage will help spread awareness of the center, move us to assure acceptable conditions for detainees, mitigate negative impacts on the city and eventually lead to a complete reform of

IMMIGRANTS: No benefits for those here illegally

Re: “Immigrants face fight over college funding” (TNT, 9-4).

I simply cannot understand why lawmakers and other supposedly educated persons continue to have a problem understanding or comprehending the extended ramifications of one simple word in the English language: “illegal,” meaning against the law.

We are not talking simply about Latinos, as the article would seem to imply. There are many others coming to America legally or illegally, establishing islands of culture and refusing to integrate into society.

There is virtually no other country in the world where someone can arbitrarily cross the border, establish residency, create progeny, and

VOTING: What is Pierce County hiding?

What is the Superior Court of Pierce County hiding?

I have requested the names of those registered voters who have refused jury duty because they are not citizens and have been told that this is somehow privileged information. I learned recently that Douglas County has released its list.

Guess what? We found seven noncitizens who are registered to vote here in Washington. Extrapolating, that would mean that all of the other counties combined would have a minimum of 266 illegal voters. Didn’t Chris Gregoire swing the election by 135 votes? What we are seeing is big-time election fraud.

Judge Ronald

ELECTION: Where do candidates stand on the real issues?

I’ve read every word of every one of The News Tribune’s editorial endorsements of the candidates for every state and federal position, whether or not it pertains to my specific district. And I am disappointed.

Why? Because I’ve been looking, in vain I might add, for the candidates’ views on recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions (corporations as “persons,” unfettered donations by political action committees, women’s reproductive rights, equal pay, etc.) as well as immigration issues, Voter ID, repeal of all or part of the Affordable Care Act, etc. The list goes on.

In our area, it is evident that each
