CRIME: Merry Christmas, package thief

Recently I joined all the people who have had and will have their UPS or FedEx packages stolen off their porches. I have to wonder if these thieves ever give a thought to the presents and good wishes that families will not be receiving because of these thefts.

I was lucky to have ordered from National Geographic, which is sending the package again. But who knows if I’ll actually get it since criminals could steal that, too. A TV report showed the face of a thief climbing porch steps and grabbing a package four minutes after UPS had delivered it.

HOLIDAYS: Late shoppers must share the blame

Re: “Santa’s sleigh delayed” (thenewstribune.com, 12-26).

I am disturbed by the attitude that people who ordered items over the weekend, just a few days prior to Christmas, are angry that packages were not delivered in time.

We must take some of the blame. Peak season starts in November. Christmas is Dec. 25 every year!

My son works for United Parcel Service. I have seen him go to work at 11 p.m., not returning home until after a 23-hour day sorting more packages than a truck could possibly handle. And people yelled at drivers for delivering after 9 p.m. When

USPS: Onerous requirement must be lifted

Re: “Is the next step privatizing the postal service?” (blog.thenewstribune.com/letters).

While reading the comments on the letter, it became obvious to me that some people think the U.S. Postal Service is funded by taxes. The USPS is funded solely by the sale of postage and other postal products.

The demise of the USPS would have no impact on the federal budget but would have a very unpleasant impact on those wishing to send a communication. It would be particularly unpleasant if the sender or recipient lived in a rural area.
