ELECTION: Kochmar best for the 30th District

Linda Kochmar, through her hard work on the Federal Way City Council, has supported many strategies in the interest of the business community. What has happened on her watch and with her support?

She has worked with Realtors and developers to facilitate economic development during stressful economic times. Her stance on the budget during her tenure has been not to raise taxes and to face the challenge of balancing the budget with funds available.

When two businesses were poised to close down under financial hardship, she supported reducing the gambling tax so the businesses could keep people in Federal Way

ELECTION: Kochmar will ably serve the 30th District

Linda Kochmar, who has served as Federal Way’s mayor, assistant mayor and City Council member, has been nominated five times by the citizens of Federal Way for best city leader. Her expertise has helped Federal Way significantly. Nonetheless, it is time for her to take her leadership experience to Olympia and serve a great number of constituents as our state representative for the 30th District.

Kochmar will fight for jobs, local businesses, public education and for struggling families. A devoted and seasoned public servant who understands our needs, she is especially adept at building consensus and reaching out to voters

SCHOOLS: Families pay for those furlough days

How is it that the collective memory is so short that the impending furlough days for the next several school years is forgotten by most? (There are 3.5 in the Federal Way School District for each of the next two years.)

Parents will have to arrange something for seven half-days of early dismissal; there’s no other way to still fulfill the “180 school day” requirement.

Just how much IS a pay cut of 3.5 days for schoolteachers? ( Do the math: Take what you’re currently earning in yearly gross pay, divide by 180, then multiply by 3.5. A significant number

FWAY: Support fire/EMS ballot measure

When I was younger, I thought the fire department’s job was merely to fight fires. As I have grown older, I now understand the vital role they play as first responders in our community. When we find ourselves amidst crisis, the fire department is called upon to bring calm to our storms.

These past few years have been difficult for us all with a struggling economy and falling home values. Not only have we been affected but our fire department has as well. South King Fire and Rescue has responsibly done the best with what we as taxpayers have given

SOUTH KING: Support fire district excess levy

South King Fire & Rescue – encompassing Des Moines, Federal Way and parts of South King County – needs our help. Everyone knows that the economy the last few years has been in the dumps. But not everyone knows that our fire district’s operating funds come solely from property taxes; with property values decreasing 20 percent or more, it’s obvious that the district must tighten its belt.

It has already greatly reduced operating expenses: 23 personnel are gone, including 13 firefighter/EMTs, and a a full-time aid car and a half-time aid car have been eliminated. Unfortunately, the economic picture is

FWAY: Carrie BeSerra for school board

I am writing in support of Carrie BeSerra for the Federal Way School Board, District 3. She has addressed what I perceive as the most current need in the Federal Way school system.

Our 30 percent dropout rate is unacceptable, and we have to find ways to decrease that number. Her solution is to increase the communication between parents and the individual teachers by use of e-mails and letters to be sent home to parents whose children are at risk of failing.

It is too late to tell a parent once the child has failed to prevent that child from

TRANSIT: Light rail delay is no surprise

Re: “Light rail to FWay delayed?” (TNT, 5-19).

Why should Federal Way be angry? They supported the light rail by having the extension included in the $17.9 billion ballot measure.

But Federal Way needs to realize a few things.

• The extension was not promised.

• Federal Way is not not high on the “political heirarchy.” The higher the political power, the better chance you have of getting the money. They don’t have the “power.”

• They are dealing with an organization, Sound Transit, that is extremely inefficient and political.

Sound Transit is building light rail at a very high

FWAY: Centre’s affordable, and staff is amazing

I was so pleased to see front-page coverage on Dumas Bay Centre in Federal Way (TNT, 3-21). The centre is a little gem with a great view and a Family Theatre that showcases local artists’ work in the lobby.

However, what makes this gem sparkle is the amazing staff. They are dedicated to keeping this affordable venue open for everyone, and they do it with a welcoming spirit and good working relationships with every guest. The fact that it is affordable in this day of poor economy adds to its sparkle.

On top of all of that, Chef Rob Sanders
