FESTIVAL: Why is peninsula excluded?

I am new to the area and just wondering: If the Daffodil Festival is a Pierce County event, why aren’t Gig Harbor and the Peninsula area represented? I understand the beginning centered around Puyallup, but those of us across the bridge are clearly part of Pierce County.

I’m writing to thank The News Tribune for recently publishing a couple of historical Tacoma Yacht Club (TYC) photos in your “Looking Back” feature. As a TYC member, I loved seeing these shots and reading about each photo.

The publication timing was perfect as our club has done some “looking back” at our history recently as part of our preparations for the 60th anniversary of our Daffodil Marine Parade coming up on Sunday. This year we are trying something new.

Our Facebook site will be used to help determine the People’s Choice Trophy, which is awarded to the parade boat most liked by the public. We invite everyone to participate during the parade. Like us on Facebook and tune in Sunday at 11:15 a.m.

TACOMA: City already has a signature event

I just finished reading an article in the Wenatchee World regarding the City of Tacoma’s Economic Development Department and how, in its desire to “kick-start a stagnant economy,” it might consider starting a festival that “should be home grown and able to attract out-of-town tourists”

Really? Do you not already have a major festival, one that will celebrate 79 years in 2012? You know, the one that has a big grand parade every year on the second Saturday in April? The one with all kinds of major events connected to it, including a royal court and a terrific float that represents your community in festival parades all over the Northwest?

I know Tacoma shares the Daffodil Festival with three other communities so maybe you consider it to be a Pierce County event rather than a Tacoma event. But for a lot of us “out-of-towners” it is still the Tacoma Daffodil Festival and we love to come over for it, rain or shine.

No wonder your festival struggles when it has no support from the city. Maybe it’s time for Tacoma to take a look at how you can help enhance the major festival you’ve had in your own community since 1933.
