After glancing at the college bowl lineups, is it any wonder that our country and the world are in such disarray? Whether you are talking about the U.S. Congress, Egypt’s attempt at democracy, Europe’s financial woes, or bowl lineups, politics and greed get involved.

There are 35 college bowl games. One would think that is enough opportunity to build a 24 conference playoff. However, the factions involved continue to place their own interests first, refusing to compromise in responding to the will of the people in producing a playoff on the order of March Madness. Champions are determined on the field, not in coach/sportscaster polls or computers.

With few exceptions, the lineups are a joke and few viewers will watch them other than the die-hard alumni because there is absolutely no leveraging of game outcomes to a higher level … they stand alone. Perhaps one of the worst lineups is this year’s Rose Bowl: Stanford (11-2) vs. Wisconsin (8-5). Stanford rates #6 in the Bowl Championship Series, while Wisconsin isn’t even listed since it is somewhere south of 25th.

The Big Ten conference shot itself in the foot with the creation of two divisions, and other conferences should learn from this “law of unexpected consequences.” Taken as one, Wisconsin would have placed sixth among the 12 Big Ten teams. With Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin in the same division and subsequently both earlier-mentioned teams being suspended from post season games vaulted Wisconsin into a playoff game. It never should have happened.
