GUNS: Background checks don’t infringe on rights

Re: “Senate rejects background checks, other gun measures” (TNT, 4-18).

I can’t believe the comments I heard about the bill in the Senate that would have required background checks on all gun purchases.

One commenter stated that this law would not have prevented the Sandy Hook tragedy. It might not have but it could prevent a future one.

Another made a statement about it infringing on his Second Amendment rights. Where in the Second Amendment does it state that it is illegal to require a background check? Law-abiding individuals would be able to buy all the guns they wish; it

GUNS: We’re already in all sorts of databases

What is all this uproar about background checks and a supposedly feared database about? Don’t people realize that they are already firmly embedded in multiple databases – government and business – that government can get to?

If you have a driver’s license, then you are in one of those feared databases. Just how difficult do you think it would be to find out what your property tax is? The list goes on and on. Not one word about them. Why not?

Do you actually think that those Nazi, jackbooted government jackals are going to take away your Second Amendment rights?

GUNS: President’s actions helping one industry

I have been critical of President Obama for his overblown rhetoric, misleading promises and outright lies regarding the financial and economic condition of our nation.

So I am pleased to commend his singular, but enormous, stimulant to one segment of our national economy. His irrational position on gun and ammunition controls has exponentially increased the market for all guns and ammunition everywhere. Many gun shops are sold out, and many customers are standing for hours in long lines. Membership in most gun and Second Amendment organizations is growing in record numbers.

So, many thanks, Mr. President, for your one positive

DEBT: Jefferson had thoughts on that, too

Re: “2nd Amendment could stand updating (letter, 2-21).

The letter writer took a quote from a letter to Samuel Kercheval from Thomas Jefferson, presumably to support the notion that the Second Amendment needs to be changed. The following from the letter speaks volumes to the current state of the union, and it isn’t about the 2nd Amendment.

Jefferson wrote that “we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts, as that we must be taxed in our meat

GUNS: 2nd Amendment could stand updating

Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1816: “Some men look at constitutions with sanctimonious reverence, and deem them, like the ark of the covenant, too sacred to be touched. I also know that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when he was a boy.”

The age of the musket has long been surpassed by the scientific improvements to the gun. The Second Amendment, which went into effect in 1791, has not kept pace with present-day advances. It may

GUNS: Proposal treats symptoms, not causes

I oppose the gun-control legislation and particularly the “universal background check” proposed by Sens. Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein that would criminalize private firearms transfers, among other things. Besides impairing private property rights and infringing on the Second Amendment, it boils down overall to a cynical scheme to treat symptoms, not causes.

Liberal policies the past 50 years have liberated the actual causes of mass shootings to roam the streets, all laden with “rights” but lacking the corresponding responsibilities. History from 1994 to 2004 tells us gun bans do not prevent mass shootings. Clearly, mental illness and criminality must be

GUNS: Read the 2nd Amendment more closely

Am I the only person in America who can quote the entire Second Amendment? Have the NRA and their lobbyists convinced the entire population that the first half of the single-sentence amendment does not exist?

Herewith is the entire text: “A WELL REGULATED MILITIA being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

This sounds pretty simple to me, or am I missing the intent of the founding fathers?

If you want to keep and bear arms, you must belong to a well-regulated militia. We in

GUNS: The 2nd Amendment has long been abused

We need to stop the ignorant talk about the 2nd Amendment and what our forefathers adopted regarding the right to bear arms. The defense about this amendment is outdated and ridiculous in today’s world.

We live in a country now of high-tech weapons designed to kill massive amounts of human beings. We are today’s forefathers, and it is our responsibility to protect our innocent population who are fearful now of schools, malls, theaters, places of worship, political rallies, freeways, highways, streets, their homes and any other place where it was once safe.

The NRA and Legislature needs to do something
