ELECTION: Jeannie Darneille does what’s right

I direct Oasis Youth Center for LGBTQ youth in Pierce County. Oasis has served thousands of youth and young adults since the community created it in 1988 as response to the unique needs of LGBTQ.

In the early 1990s, Oasis became a program of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD). In 1996, TPCHD ended its responsibility and oversight over Oasis. Fortunately, Pierce County AIDS Foundation (PCAF), under the leadership of Jeannie Darneille, took Oasis on as on of its programs. Finding secure, ongoing funding for Oasis was a huge challenge for PCAF, but she persevered.

This is just one example

ELECTION: Connelly seems obsessed with winning at all costs

Another glossy mailer from Jack Connelly arrived today, as they have every few days for months, paid for by the nearly $1 million Connelly has spent in his effort to replace Jeannie Darneille in the State Senate.

As it joins the growing stack of cardboard invective, one can only marvel at Connelly’s single-minded obsession about Darneille. He is not just out to win a campaign for political office. He will spend any amount of money, twist the meaning of any vote, make any outrageous claim; no matter, in his mind Darneille must be gotten out of office at any cost.

ELECTION: Darneille’s votes are fair game

I do not understand the Darneille campaign’s attacks on Jack Connelly’s campaign. All the Connelly campaign has done is brought her votes to the attention of her constituents. If the Connelly campaign had not done that there would be no way for voters to know that she has been voting against their interests in the Legislature.

I appreciate the work by the Connelly campaign to do that, and I appreciate the fact that it is limiting its campaign mailers to her voting record. This should be fair game.

In emphasizing the picture on the mailer, Jeannie Darneille’s campaign is trying

ELECTION: Darnielle’s votes, arguments appalling

Re: “Ad with teen in short skirt may be racy, but it’s right” (TNT, 10-24).

I am appalled by state Rep. Jeannie Darnielle’s votes and her explanations. Her idea that an 18-year-old high school student is old enough to decide how she wants to respond to grooming and sexual advances by a high school teacher reflects a complete lack of understanding of this age group and the manner in which young women can be taken advantage of and exploited.

The power differential between an adult teacher and a young student of that age is a tremendous factor in the

ELECTION: Connelly’s campaign tactics are despicable

I find the majority of Jack Connelly’s state Senate campaign pieces utterly despicable. One can only hope that the voters of the 27th District recognize half-truths as well as out-and-out misrepresentations when they see them.

As a lifelong voter, I have never seen such a negative local campaign. I find it very discouraging that anyone running for public office would base a campaign on such false information and smear tactics. By his actions, Connelly has shown himself to be unfit to hold public office.

ELECTION: Connelly will be more independent

I am so impressed with the commitment demonstrated by Jack and Angela Connelly in the race for the state Senate. They have been committed to the 27th District for years. They live, raise their family and work in this district. They have been incredibly generous with their time, treasure and talent.

I have heard that Connelly wants to remain independent in the Senate and does not want to feel obligated to all of the PACs and special interests. There is no question but that he will have to spend more to defeat a career politician who has appeared on the

ELECTION: Darneille has served community well

Whoever wrote Jack Connelly’s ads has a nose a foot long. What a distortion of state Rep. Jeannie Darneille’s record.

Darneille’s solitary 2001 vote Connelly cites was to keep the sex offender facility out of Pierce County. She didn’t want a disproportionate number of offenders settling here after release. State solutions often become local problems.

The Ethics Board she voted against cost taxpayers $1.1 million per biennium and issued only three fines for $150 in two years. Do the math.

Darneille restored voting rights for felons only after their sentences were served. Last session she kept the Washington State History

ELECTION: Darneille’s responsive to citizens

I have never been involved in a political campaign before, but I am deeply involved in Jeannie Darneille’s campaign for state Senate in the 27th Legislative District.

I first worked with her when she was the director of the Pierce County AIDS Foundation, and I was a volunteer at Three Cedars AIDS hospice. I got to see firsthand her courage in fighting for disadvantaged people and in standing up for just but unpopular causes.

I contacted her again recently with my concerns about education, and she took most of the morning to meet with my colleagues and me. I was
