In view of the rage against Jews we are currently seeing in Europe and America, it was disturbing to read the letter, “Mideast: Israel exerts right of conquerors” (TNT, 8-16). The idea that the founders of Israel were colonialists who conquered the indigenous Palestinians is simply not true.
The real indigenous people of the Holy Land are the Jews who have lived there continuously for more than 3,000 years, often as a minority in their own land. Ironically, before 1948 the term Palestine was associated with Jews and the Jewish homeland.
The immigrants of the late 1800s legally purchased land and began to restore a region that was underdeveloped and underpopulated. An assortment of ethnic groups, including Arabs, lived in this region. The prosperity and opportunity that followed attracted thousands of Arabs in the pre-state years.
So why all the opposition to one Jewish-majority state among 56 Islamic-majority states? The jihadist hatred of Jews being demonstrated by Hamas is fueling the rage in Europe with threats, hate speech and even violent attacks.
This goes beyond criticism of Israeli policies and illustrates more than ever why Jews need a Jewish state in their ancestral homeland.
