EDUCATION: Schedule changes make sense

Re: “Give high school sleepyheads a break” (TNT, 3-24).

During the 30 years that I taught, I saw a number of schedules come an go, and I have a few thoughts on the subject.

I think classes should begin at 9 a.m. and end at 2:15 p.m. Why so late and why so early?

Such a plan would consist of six 50-minute periods and would allow students to get a more adequate amount of sleep, because dragging kids out of bed at 5:30 or 6 a.m. to get to school by 7 is unrealistic and causes far too many of them to become dropouts.

The most-watched TV programs take place between 8 and 11 p.m., and hard as parents may try, many if not most kids do not get enough sleep to perform well during the school day.

We need to be more realistic.
