ELECTIONS: Why vote for ‘lesser of two evils’?

Is it time for a third political party to emerge?

What would happen if all those who say, “I voted for the lesser of two evils” actually voted for a third candidate who was their real first choice? My view is that it would challenge the rule of the two big-money-dominated parties now in power and restore true integrity to democracy.

The “lesser of two evils” voters’ rationale is that a vote for a third party candidate would be wasted and therefore contribute to the power of the party they most emphatically don’t want to have win. This rationale must go; it is ruining our chances for a true first choice.

With courage we could make it go – by supporting political candidates who believe in mandatory public funding of political campaigns. We publicly fund such things as schools and transportation. Why not fund campaigns whose source of financial support is “we the people”?

Isn’t having fair elections – elections unbiased by corporate bribe money – just as important to the survival of our country? Our legislators must be free to vote as “we the people” need them to.

A new Green Party local organization is being formed in Pierce County that addresses this concern. For more information go to www.gp–wa.org or call 253-539-2720.
