Re: The real monument to the World War II veterans, is not the structure on the Washington, D.C., Mall, but it is the courageous woman park ranger who stood alone, unashamed and unpaid, to protect it.

This monument arises from the continuity of our representative government that strives for the common good and eventually gave this woman the right to vote and equal pay for equal work. This woman and the small easily moveable fences, were there to protect the World War II Monument, not to prevent the vets from getting in and viewing it.

The World War II veterans fought and defeated the Nazis, who burned down their own German parliament building, the Reichstag, and blamed others in order for their fascist, right-wing, minority to seize power.

It is ironic that these courageous WWWII vets were utilized in a photo op by Republicans to blame others for a government shutdown they themselves caused. The Republicans’ time should have been spent at the Washington Mall reflecting pool taking a long hard look at themselves; their faces and actions do not reflect the courage of the WWII vets.

The refusal of John Boehner and moderate Republicans, like our four Washington state representatives, to bring a clean government funding bill to the floor of the House of Representatives and call for a vote for fear of losing their jobs, is a cowardly stain on the true WWII monument. Courage is the real WWII monument, and it is truly barricaded.
