JFK: Visit to Tacoma was magical, inspiring

Re: “The day Kennedy came to Tacoma” (TNT, 9-22).

I saw President Kennedy in person on my 13th birthday! His visit on Sept. 26, 1963, was important enough for me to miss a day of eighth grade at Jason Lee Junior High.

Cheney Stadium was a blanket of humanity. Blue skies with brilliant sunshine shone down on our handsome young president, making his starched shirt glow while he stood at the lectern. JFK treasured youth; he spoke to young people helping us create futures which hadn’t been imagined previously.

Thank you so much, News Tribune, for recreating that magical, wonderful day when all dreams were possible. That experience became a cherished treasure because only two months later he lay dead while students and teachers wept in the halls and classrooms of Jason Lee, our inspirational young president gone.
