FOOD: I-522 is about our right to know

Re: “Voters should reject very flawed Initiative 522″ (letter, 9-1).

The letter advising people to vote no on the genetically modified food labeling initiative merits response. I-522 speaks directly to our right to know what we are consuming. Yes, it is a question of safety and there is more than enough evidence to indicate GMOs aren’t safe.

I want to call attention to a “statistic” the writer used – the one about those “440 peer-reviewed scientific studies” he claims as proof that GMOs are safe.

If the writer had actually read them instead of just pulling that “statistic” off a GMO pundit’s blog site, he would have seen that most of the studies cited were not safety studies on genetically modified foods. Some simply compared levels of certain nutrients like fat and protein in GM crops relative to non-GM crops. Others just looked at how efficiently livestock converted GM feed into a food product. Many of those studies did, in fact, show problems with GM foods.

The writer also fails to mention that of those studies actually proclaiming GMOs to be safe, none are long-term studies and all are industry sponsored and/or funded. A review of truly independent studies reveals a quite different and much darker picture of GMOs.

Longer-term studies (something the GMO industry actively opposes) are showing some very disturbing results. The industry’s enormous propaganda machine is running full tilt. Don’t take my word for it. Do your own research. The truth will speak for itself. Vote yes on I-522.
