TACOMA: Who really pays for higher wage mandate?

Re: “City needs living-wage ordinance” (letter, 8-25).

I wonder about the world view of people who would subscribe to this proposal. Where do they think the money to pay the higher wages will come from? Only two choices: the company or the buyers.

If Wal-Mart grants higher wages, the probability is very high that the prices of its merchandise would increase, making it even more difficult for people strapped for money.

Oh, I know: Include price controls in the ordinance! How many small businesses would that wreck, and how many jobs would be lost? Maybe the marketplace works best if you leave it alone.
