MEDIA: KIRO biased against Tacoma and Pierce County

M. “Morf” Morford’s recent Your Voice article (8-13)  about Tacoma’s heritage reminded me of an ongoing problem Tacoma and Pierce County have with TV stations in Seattle, particularly with KIRO-TV, Channel 7.

KIRO consistently attempts to use news stories to put down Tacoma and Pierce County. For example, a short time ago there was a news piece on KIRO’s evening broadcast about some sexual shenanigans down in Olympia. To describe the location visually to the viewers, KIRO used a map of Western Washington showing Olympia, the location of the incident. For some odd reason, the only other image on this map was Tacoma.

Now, most people in Western Washington know exactly where Olympia is and don’t need additional help in visualizing its location. Plus, Tacoma and Pierce County had nothing to do with the Olympia story. It was just KIRO’s way of attaching a negative story to Tacoma.

In another incident, KIRO described a boat wreck on the Columbia River as being “155 miles south of Tacoma.” They also used a map showing the location of the wreck and, you guessed it, an image of Tacoma, for viewer reference.

Tacoma and Pierce County had nothing to do with these negative stories, yet both were used in order for KIRO to tie in the negativity to our area. There is no reason for KIRO to do this other than sheer arrogance and mean-spiritedness. It’s time for KIRO to start acting like adults.
