Let’s be very clear: I voted for same sex marriage and believe that women should not be subservient to men. Having said that, I find myself appalled by the people in our community who are working against the congregation of Mars Hill Church in their effort to raise money to repair their church roof.
If I read Peter Callaghan’s column (TNT, 7-21) correctly, no one would have unknowingly supported the fundraising event at The Hub, because it was intended for church members and supporters of the church. There was no deception or subterfuge.
When conservative churches make known their objections to the beliefs of more liberal churches, there is often outrage and ridicule. So why is it okay for liberals to interfere in the business of a conservative church? It strikes me that there is intolerance and hypocrisy involved here.
I would not attend Mars Hill Church, because I don’t believe as they do. They are, however, entitled to believe and worship God as they understand Him and His requirements. The God that I love and worship each Sunday in a mainstream church loves and accepts all. That’s my belief and I expect it will be respected, just as I must respect the beliefs of others.
It’s a little disappointing that The Hub knuckled under to pressure. Lucky for them, the members of Mars Hill Church appear to be understanding and forgiving.
