WARNING: Usurious charge to cash check

As an elderly person, I hired a young single mother to do some work for me and paid her by check. It was after my own bank had closed, so she took her check to a check-cashing business. It charged her $23 to cash a $40 check.

I realize those check-cashing places are at risk, but this is usury! She only got $17 from her wages. I wish to warn other young workers that it would be better to not go to these types of places, and to ask your employers to either pay earlier in the day or to pay cash.
