Re: “Obama’s fight against global warming is pure folly” (Charles Krauthammer column, 7-5).

Global warming is not pure folly. Statements like Krauthammer’s ought to be examined carefully. If readers want the truth, they can check with reliable sources, including NOAA and NASA.

Most citizens stay in a constant state of confusion or denial due to the deliberate muddying of the truth by people like Krauthammer. The global warming scenario – with its climate change, rising sea levels, droughts, fires, ocean acidification and many other threats to life on planet Earth – is complicated enough without the very intentional misinformation put out by those who want to raise doubt.

Global warming is a rapidly accelerating danger for all life on Earth. Yes, even we will become endangered species if greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane and more continue to blanket the planet, preventing the sun’s heat from escaping into space.

The impacts are already being felt here in the Northwest. Parts of the Puget Sound are the most acidic of any waters measured on the globe. Bark beetles and other parasites thrive in warmer and wetter winters and may kill off much of our verdant flora, making the threat of forest fires ever greater and closer to home. Already, increasing thunderstorms ignite fires west of the Cascades.

It is time we armed ourselves with the facts and started insisting that our elected leaders initiate effective responses.
