MARRIAGE: God’s definition is the right one

The pre-eminent destroyer of morality and religious freedom is the Supreme Court of the United States.

But I take solace that God stands above the Supreme Court. His opinion on marriage has not changed, nor is he confused in the least simply because judges and lawmakers decide to reinvent and corrupt the gift of marriage into something it cannot be to satisfy the lusts of the amoral.

Homosexual “marriage” is an idea manufactured by mere man, not God. Intentionally raising children without a father and a mother is a human concept, not God’s. That is why opposition to marriage transformation

COUNTY: Mitigate obnoxious odor from roads facility

I live in “Spana-Graham” near the Pierce County road works maintenance facility. When I went out to get the paper this morning, I was greeted with the nose-numbing, sneeze-producing stench of the tar (or whatever it is) from that facility that was so thick in the air that you could actually taste it.

People who live in that area are subjected to this stink for most of the spring/summer; even if we have a nice sunny day, you still can’t be outside without having to gag on the stench in the air.

Even with the downpour of rain this morning,

MARRIAGE: The real Supreme Court has not changed the rules

The front-page headline Thursday reads, “Supreme Court strikes down same-sex marriage barriers.” A headline correction is in order.

United States federal court judges changed the law, not the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is our Lord, and our Lord has not changed the rules.

Recent state and federal legislation regarding marriage, abortion and drug use are turning our counrty into Sodom and Gomorrah. The rules have not changed, and there will be consequences for our acts. Federal and state legislation does not change the facts or how we should live. There is only one Supreme Judge.

MARRIAGE: Justice prevails with DOMA decision

I celebrate the affirmative decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and uphold the lower court’s decision about California’s Proposition 8. As a United Methodist Christian, I believe that every person has sacred worth and is due all of the services provided and rights protected by our churches and governments.

DOMA has been a source of grave injustice and has done untold harm by preventing millions from enjoying the full quality of life afforded the majority. DOMA’s negation by the court ends an era of unconscionable discrimination, opens the door to marriage

ENTITLEMENTS: Resist unsustainable extravagances

The Obama administration is driving us into an “entitlement” culture and nation – from top to bottom; which is socialism with a creeping loss of our freedoms, opportunities, privacy and prosperity.

Almost a majority of U.S. residents (legal and illegal) now believe they are entitled to food stamps, health care, housing, K-12 education, transportation, domestic security and international peace (all without any contribution).

This majority now includes the chronic unemployed, labor unionists, many local government workers, the president and his appointees (note the Obama family’s $100 million trip to Africa and top officials’ “conference” soirées to Las Vegas at taxpayers’

FIREWORKS: Soon it will be Terrorizing Wildlife Week

Maybe the Pierce County Council should designate the first week of July as “Terrorize Pets and Wildlife Week.”

On the Fourth of July, from about 9 in the evening until 1 or 2 in the morning of July 5, I take our old golden retriever Jake into a bathroom that doesn’t have an outside wall. I turn the radio on loud, fire up a rotating fan, fill his water dish and do what I can to keep him from being terrorized until the main barrage is over.

Unfortunately, the birds and squirrels we feed and the family pets in the

SCHOOLS: Teachers aren’t being well prepared

Re: “US teacher education barely gets a passing grade” (editorial, 6-24).

The editorial exposes the incompetence of our upper institutions of learning regarding their duty to properly prepare today’s teachers. It brings to light a situation that has been pushed under the rug and ignored.

As a grandparent I have had considerable exposure in witnessing a decline in the ability of today’s teachers, compared to those from the 1940s and ’50s. I have blamed the teachers themselves for their inability to maintain discipline in the classrooms in order to provide a positive learning environment. But how can they be

4TH AMENDMENT: Does it mean anything to Americans anymore?

The TNT quickly publishes partisan drivel concerning Vacation Obama (letter, 6-25), which editors are keenly aware is patently false and dripping of personal “otherism,” while continually eschewing bipartisan, civil liberal-tarian, thoughtful and constitutional criticism.

In a war on a noun or tactic, no boundaries exist. In war without borders, all are suspect. When all are suspect, citizenship is irrelevant.

Metadata and content of our domestic and international internet and telephone activies are being stored in Utah. Are all Americans suspected of terrorism? What of probable cause? Is the 4th Amendment irrelevant?

Nearly 5 million hold security clearances like Manning
