LAKEWOOD: Some perspective on Lochburn’s students

Re: “Students’ behavior disgraceful” (letter, 6-14).

My daughter was part of the Lochburn Middle School group at the Tacoma Rainiers game. I’m sorry they ruined someone’s night. No excuse, but here’s something to consider.

The staff are hard-working, love kids and are good. There were nine adult volunteers. I know our kids aren’t like the kids in Gig Harbor. You’d be shocked at the number of single-parent homes. As of Dec. 1, Lochburn is 95 percent free and reduced lunch. Many have had a parent deployed much of their life.

That’s no excuse but gives some perspective of the challenges staff face. They’d love kids to come fully refined so they can just teach higher math and college prep. They don’t have that luxury. I’m grateful they are willing to make a difference in the lives of kids others want nothing to do with.

I wish they’d told the teacher their night was being ruined. No, it’s not their job (it isn’t even the teacher’s job). The teachers should’ve been aware, but they aren’t perfect.

I was at the same game with my church (I’m on staff) next to a group of Girl Scouts. They were screaming and not interested in the game. They were loud, even obnoxious. But I loved that they were there with friends having a great time.

The Lochburn kids have a lot to learn about social decorum. Thanks for pointing that out. Please pray for those kids and for the adults loving on them.
