MARATHON: Traffic snarl was a nightmare

The traffic detours for the Tacoma Marathon were the worst I have ever seen.

I was trying to get to Anthony’s at Point Defiance for a luncheon date. I was completely shocked (as were hundreds of other drivers, I’m sure) to find that no traffic was allowed onto Schuster Parkway; everyone was being detoured onto Stadium Way – which is closed for construction! What a gigantic traffic nightmare.

Hundreds of cars slowly made their way through the construction at Stadium Way into the middle of downtown Tacoma. The gridlock was horrendous. It took me 45 minutes to work my way over to Point Defiance.

The traffic should not have been allowed onto Interstate 705 at all, and large signs should have been posted letting drivers know they would have to get onto Interstate 5 and state Route 16 if they wanted to get to the waterfront area.

If Tacoma is going to have a marathon, it needs to be run on the outskirts of town, not right in the middle of the city and certainly not along Ruston Way, where hundreds of people wanted to go to enjoy the sunshine and spend money at local restaurants. I can only imagine how much revenue was lost Sunday because of a ridiculous race.

Next time, have a little consideration for others in town who might want to enjoy their Sunday and for businesses that could certainly use the revenue in these tough times.
