The letter (TNT, 4-30) regarding emphasis on subjects other than sports is right on the mark. Many years ago, Terrel H. Bell, secretary of education during the Reagan administration, believed that this was an emphasis that was missing. He believed that sports took the headlines while achievements in math, science and arts were rarely acclaimed.
When he retired he and Dr. Donna Elmquist started the nonprofit TH Bell and Associates and spent many years in an effort to give these subjects their due in an effort to improve our schools. After Bell’s death in 1974, Elmquist continued this fight and I believe still does. Depending on contributions, it is a struggle, but well worth her efforts.
The future of our country is in the education of great minds who construct, think of new ways and solve problems. Let us give them our support, accolades and respect.
