It’s been three years since the Affordable Care Act was passed. The Democrats praised this legislation as the cure to our health-care system. President Obama and the Democratic leaders campaigned on this utopian idea of lower premiums and universal coverage for all.
Unfortunately, the opposite is happening. This law of 2,700 pages of taxation, restrictions and government regulations is creating a backlash of opposition from business leaders and the general public.
The reality is millions of people have seen their health-care premiums increase by 46 percent, even with federal tax credits and premium assistance. In addition, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that Obamacare will cause 3 million people to lose their insurance completely in 2014.
The CBO expects that 6 million will have to pay the individual-mandate tax penalty in 2016 because they don’t want or can’t afford coverage. Many small businesses are cutting hours for full-time employees below 30 hour a week and are not hiring more than 50 people to avoid federal penalties. Can we say “job killer”?
It’s not surprising that Rep. Nancy Pelosi stated so boldly that ”you need to pass this bill so you can know what’s in it.” Well, it’s passed, and we are all finding out what’s in it.
This may be Obama’s greatest legislative victory but it will be his greatest political failure. Every Democrat followed Obama, the Pied Piper. Now it looks like we are all paying the piper.
