In the early 1980s, Nancy Reagan started the “Just say no to drugs” program. Now two states have legalized marijuana. At the same time, laws were just starting to favor gay rights but same-sex marriages were a dream. Now several states have laws allowing same-sex marriage.
Whatever your position, these changes did not happen overnight. It was a slow, methodical progression of legal battles, minor victories and a change in public opinion. Now we have gun-control being fought over, specifically addressing background checks. No one can understand the NRA’s feverish fight over something so small, but it is the first line to be crossed. Those who support gun rights can see the lessons in the past.
The Second Amendment is not an “afterthought.” It is second to defend the First Amendment. Since it was ratified in 1791 doesn’t mean it applies only to muskets. That analogy would mean that the First Amendment doesn’t apply to the Internet.
The 2nd Amendment requires/allows for a force that can defend itself from its own government. Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong and Pol Pot all seized weapons from their citizens before killing millions of them. Modern society has created a whole slew of misguided, stressed-out or dysfunctional individuals bent on hurting someone else. If you remove guns from the equation, they will only use knives and pressure cookers.
Leave the 2nd Amendment alone and address the real issues behind the violence of modern society.
