ISRAEL: Americans need to learn the truth

I read with disgust the Jerusalem Post editorial (Off the wire, 4-19) regarding the Israeli government so-called “providing basic democratic rights” even to those “openly opposed to Israel.”

Are you kidding? This is simply and emphatically not true. Having just returned from Israel on a trip to specifically explore the Palestinian territories, I can tell your readers we need to wake up and begin to examine the truth of what is actually going on in the land some call holy.

The truth is the Israeli government and its policy of allowing for and even encouraging Jewish settlements is simply stealing, against international law, Palestinian land. Not only land but water and houses, through middle-of-the-night demolitions, often cutting off Palestinian families from each other and from employment possibilities.

When I was in Israel, a 14-year-old American citizen was arrested for throwing rocks at an Israeli soldier in protest of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. This against tanks, rubber bullets, “skunk” (a spray projected from a water cannon, the smell of which lingers in the Palestinian households for months) and the regular use of tear gas.

As yet another arms deal is signed by the Israeli and U.S government for $10 billion, always under the guise of security, the Palestinian people ask me, “Why do Americans hate us so?” My only response is, “We do not know you,” and yes, I think we do not understand the situation.
