TRAFFIC: Tailgating illegal and never acceptable

Your response to a Traffic Q&A question (TNT, 3-25) was incomplete and gave some readers the false impression that tailgating was an acceptable practice.

Your response was meant to give the person being tailgated a list of self-defense options on how to avoid confrontation with an aggressive tailgater, but your response failed to chastise the tailgater.

Highways in this area have become so crowded that the concept of a passing lane doesn’t exist. Most of the time there’s more traffic than one or two driving lanes can accommodate. All lanes become driving lanes out of necessity, at times moving slower than the posted speed limit.

Many aggressive drivers try to bully their way through such traffic by tailgating the other drivers into submission, disregarding the normal flow of traffic.

Tailgating is an act of aggression. It puts innocent people at risk and is a major cause of deadly traffic accidents. Tailgating is illegal and unacceptable under any circumstance. The Q&A response failed to reinforce these very important points.
