HEALTH: Where’s care and compassion?

Case history: AB is a 56-year-old custodian with chronic back pain. In normal health, the rule of thumb is that we can lift 40 percent of our body weight; when injured, we can lift 10 percent. Therefore AB should be lifting no more than 13 pounds, but he is required to move tables that weigh 100 pounds and set up 300 chairs two or three times a week.

AB’s prognosis for relief of back pain: lousy. AB is terrified of losing this job because it provides health care insurance for him and his family.

I could cite many such cases. Some people have deductibles so high that they cannot afford to use their insurance.

We need universal free medical care from cradle to grave. So the rich would need to pay higher taxes. Tough. Whatever happened to compassion?
