CLIMATE: Is some of the scare talk just hot air?

Re: “Climate change science to enter nation’s classes” (TNT, 3-10).

According to the article by the Inside Climate News organization, “By eighth grade, students should understand that ‘human activities, such as the release of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, are major factors in the current rise in the Earth’s mean surface temperature (global warming).’”

I am not saying that global warming isn’t occurring; it may well be because the Earth’s warming and cooling has been occurring since it was formed. But some people are using that fact to promote their own self-interests by using the old Henny-Penny “sky-is-falling” approach to scare others into going along with their agendas.

Without a doubt, human activities are factors in the warming process; whether they are “major factors” is certainly questionable.

We should continue the research and take whatever reasonable precautions it leads us to, but let’s not be stampeded into indoctrinating our young people and spending scarce taxpayer dollars on programs similar to the Solyndra fiasco that was subsidized by the government (to the tune of $535 million.)

Some folk are always prone to stretching or bending the facts to convince others, so let’s remember Mark Twain’s quote when he was told that his obituary had been printed in The New York Journal: “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
