I read with interest the article about Tacoma Middle Schools revising the football program after a long absence (TNT, 2-25). It was happy news.
I had the pleasure of coaching football at Stewart Middle School in the early ’50s. It was a positive program with some great ballplayers in following years. We usually had 35 to 40 ballplayers in uniform on those teams. Many of them went on to great careers in college, some in the pros.
I can never forget names like Doug McClary, Ed Tingstad, Jim Jones, Duane Lowell, Jack Walters and many more. Lincoln and Stadium had great teams in those days. With the loss of football at the middle school level, there was certainly a drop in the high school level.
For so many football helped to keep them in the right direction and to have great careers into their retirement years. I wish this program much success.
