OLYMPICS: Wrestling wrongly eliminated

The most dedicated and hardest-working athletes in the world have been swept into the dustbin of history. Fifteen people have decided wrestling, the world’s oldest sport, is to be eliminated from the 2020 Olympics (TNT, 2-13).

As a former football, wrestling, track and field, and baseball coach and a competitive athlete in all of those sports from junior high to the collegiate level, I know what I’m taking about. This is like a bad dream. Wrestling is the core sport of all power sports, utilizing eye-hand coordination, balance, strength, power, mental and physical toughness, courage, endurance, strategy and tactics, laser focus and the power of the human will to achieve victory in one-on-one, hand-to-hand combat.

Olympic competition is the Mount Everest of the sport of wrestling, and in one fell swoop this opportunity to display remarkable individual achievement is taken away. Wrestling is hugely popular when advertised and is the fastest-growing high school female sport in the United States.

The voting and ranking was secret – cowardly in my opinion, and should be exposed. Fifteen committee members have decimated the dreams of millions of unique athletes around the world, and I say shame on them.
