A letter writer (TNT, 2-15) complains that Puyallup residents did not support the bond issue. However, I routinely hear about how poorly the district is run by comments on various articles regarding schools, particularly when schools want more money. It begs the question: Are schools deserving of the funding they do get?
My answer to this (as a teacher) is: likely not. I notice several issues which must be addressed:
• Are students mastering the concepts being taught before moving on?
• Are parents allowed unrestricted access to schools and able to observe in order to see if they want their child to remain in that school?
• Is the district using existing funding wastefully in programs and planning?
I regularly see kids who have not mastered prerequisite concepts before moving on and also see administration not forthcoming in what they do in parental involvement and planning.
