Re: “Ultimate goal is civilian disarmament” (letter, 1-23).
The writer suggests that our president, vice president and Sen. Dianne Feinstein are conspiring to rid our society of guns. And he may be right.
But when we find that more than 1,000 Americans have died from privately owned guns since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and three other schools have experienced shootings in the same time period, we have to admit to having a serious problem.
Not that I am averse to guns in the proper setting. In the Vietnam era I carried a gun all three years I was over there, but in Gig Harbor I find the neighbors are much friendlier; I have no need for a gun.
If I were a hunter I may want a gun but, as a vegetarian I have no need to kill anything for my sustenance.
Then, there’s the questionable theory that I may have to defend myself against government tyranny. The nearest thing to government tyranny I’ve encountered is the IRS, and I have a tax man who protects me from them.
So if we purge our society of guns, I’d have no objections.
