Re: “Ultimate goal is civilian disarmament” (letter, 1-23).
The letter writer clearly shows who and what we need to be afraid of, and it is not the government trying to formulate a common-sense approach to stemming the river of blood that flows from the wellspring of gun violence in this nation.
What we need to be afraid of are people like him who, against all evidence to the contrary, believe someone wants to take away his guns. The last time I checked, even the most sensible attempts to regulate dangerous ammunition and firearms – such as armor-piercing rounds, military-style weapons and huge cartridges – have been met with vociferous opposition.
We have talked much recently about mental health and the role it plays in gun violence, but little has been said about the rampant paranoia of overarmed citizens who scare me just as much as any mentally ill patient with access to weapons.
People who see bogeymen where none exist suffer from delusional paranoia, and I urge them to seek psychiatric help before they harm themselves or others. No one wants their guns; we just want to see them in the hands of mentally competent citizens.
