I tend to agree with the writer that a new per-mile tax (TNT, 1-10) for funding highway construction and maintenance is less workable than is our present system based on fuel taxes. Fairness requires an exception, however, as we start to see electric vehicles that don’t use taxable fuels.
But I was more than a little surprised by the writer’s belief that a pay-per-mile scheme would be an intolerable invasion of privacy. If he doesn’t want “big brother” tracking his every move, he should do his moving somewhere other than on public highways.
