GAS: Choices few in funding our roads

Re: “Taxing by the mile is a dumb idea” (letter, 1-18).

I enjoyed reading the letter concerning the suggested pay-by-mile idea for raising road funds.

Let’s stop the hyperventilating and loose talk and think of something here. If it is indeed necessary to raise funds to fix and improve the highway system, there there are only a few choices: Raise the gas tax, go to the mileage method, ration the mileage that is going to be allowed on each vehicle, stop driving and use mass transit, or allow the highway system to collapse from bottlenecks and repairs not done and bridges not maintained.

Pick your poison.

It’s real simple when you start thinking first. But the alternative, revealed in the letters to the editor, is entertaining.
