Re: “U.S. must stop supporting apartheid” (letter, 1-3).
Here are facts refuting the letter labeling Israel as “apartheid.”
There are currently 17 Arab members of Israel’s governing Knesset; a total of 49 have served over the years. Haneen Zoabi, a female member of Knesset, just won an Israeli Supreme Court decision enabling her to stand for re-election.
Zoabi, known for frequent anti-Israeli incitement and participation in the 2010 Gaza flotilla, has expressed the goal to “undermine the political and moral legitimacy” of Israel. She wouldn’t be allowed to vote let alone have a government seat in most Arab countries – or in this country!
Providing Israel means through the Iron Dome defense system to protect its citizens — both Jewish and Arab — from attack is entirely “justifiable.” Indiscriminate barrages of rockets fired from the “liberated” Gaza Strip pose a deadly threat to all residents of the tiny Israeli state.
Arab doctors, lawyers, journalists, entertainers, etc., work freely and in concert with their Jewish Israeli neighbors (yes neighbors, as Arab citizens do live in Jewish neighborhoods). Israeli doctors — Jewish and Arab — treat hundreds of patients from all over the Arab world, including patients from Gaza in the midst of missile attacks.
Is Israel perfect? No. Is there discrimination in its society? Yes, and that is subject of constant and open debate. But to label Israel an apartheid state is false, and calling for the boycott of companies and educational institutions that make enormous technological, medical, agricultural and academic contributions to the world is becoming altogether too fashionable.
