PORT: Longshore workers aren’t port employees

Re: “Taxpayers subsidize generous pay, benefits” (letter, 12-29).

it is often assumed that the longshore workers are employees of the port where they work; they are not. Longshore workers work out of the International Longshoremen’s Association under a contract. They work at the port, not for the port.

The Port of Tacoma does not pay wages or benefits to the longshore workers. While they are not employees of the port, you will find that the longshore workers take great pride in the port where they work. This may be why it is assumed that they are employees of the port.
