Re: “80 Tacoma Longshore workers get boost into regular union ranks” (TNT, 12-25).
The average cost per person for these promotions is $83,000 per year for wages and benifits, plus they get 13 paid holidays. Health insurance is provided at no cost, and they get 100 percent coverage. Presciptions cost $1 per prescription.
The average wage at the port is $97,000, and foremen receive close to $200,000 per year. Senior managers receive six weeks of vacation per year, and the most experienced retired individuals receive $71,000 per year.
I am pleased that the Port of Tacoma continues to grow and hire workers, which will improve the unemployment in our area. However, with the port’s continued growth and generous disbursement of wages and benefits, why does it continue to need taxpayer money?
