President Obama himself admitted “this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing” and “taking the necessary steps to reduce gun violence would take commitment and compromise.”
The NRA offered a reasonable proposal to protect our children. The anti-gun lobby immediately responded by showing the liberal hypocrisy on compromising. With blood in the water, the only solution the left wanted to hear was that the NRA is disbanding and the Second Amendment is being repealed.
PTA executive director Bill Williams used the killing of four Lakewood police officers as an example of firearms being ineffective for protection (TNT, 12-21). If you follow that logic, why bother arming the police at all? We can send Williams out to the Hilltop on patrol armed with his college degree and a bouquet of flowers and see how he does.
The cost of putting a guard in every school was questioned. Does Pierce County really need a million-dollar surveillance plane? Does Pierce County need 60 enforcement officers to monitor wood-burning? How about the money lost on the ferry system and McNeil Island? Maybe we should stop sending foreign aid to countries that want to cause us harm and spend it protecting our children.
We have armed officers at the Puyallup Fair, the Tacoma Dome, the Daffodil Parade, Freedom Fair, Tall Ships Festival, Tacoma Mall and our farmers markets. We care enough to protect our children in public; let’s not leave them vulnerable at school. We have to start somewhere.
