GUNS: Owners need to be ‘well regulated’

I find it deeply ironic that gun advocates hold up the Second Amendment as the unassailable defense of unregulated gun ownership in America while that same amendment clearly demands that a militia be “well regulated.”

Regulation means laws. It means laws to protect us from those who would abuse the extraordinary privilege and responsibility of owning firearms. Today, in light of recent tragedy, that law must necessarily include severe restrictions or bans on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.

Why don’t we require gun owners to take lengthy proficiency tests before licensing them to own guns the way we do with drivers? Why don’t we require home weapons safety inspections the way we do for electrical or light construction work?

Today’s firearms give us unprecedented power to kill with very little effort or discipline. Why do gun owners get a free pass to be cavalier about this power while the rest of America is held to a higher standard? It is time for the law to catch up with the state of gun ownership in America.

It is time for gun owners to be well regulated.
