GUNS: Stiffer penalties needed for crimes using any weapons

The letter writer calling NRA members accomplices to gun violence (TNT, 12-23) is spouting typical liberal kneejerk idiocy. Liberals who coddle the criminal element in our society have created this mess.

I agree that background checks are needed for purchasing firearms. However that is not enough. Anyone who wants to own a firearm should also have to take and pass a nationally standard firearms safety course and test. Make the NRA administer the program so it can be part of the solution.

I also agree that military-style weapons are not needed by normal citizens, but unfortunately, Pandora’s box has already been opened and confiscating them all would be next to impossible.

I propose a solution that liberals won’t like. Make individuals responsible for their actions. We need national standard sentences for those who commit crimes using any weapon. Make them mandatory so liberal-leaning judges would have to enforce them.

Committing a crime using any weapon – gun, knife, baseball bat, car, etc. – should be an automatic 20-year sentence. Injuring someone with that weapon while committing a crime should be an automatic life sentence. Taking someone’s life while committing a crime should bring the death penalty.

Only two appeals based on guilt or innocence should be allowed. The sentence should be carried out within one year of sentence date. Mental health issues, unhappy childhood, etc., would not be factors in determining guilt.

To those who say the death penalty does not deter crime, I say prove it!
