GUNS: What we really need will never happen

Various letters to the editor lamented that there is no simple solution to prevent shooting massacres like this from happening again. Nothing could be further from the truth. The solution is quit simple: Get rid off all guns. Stop the dissemination of these murderous weapons and make gun possession a strike-able felony; only then will this senseless slaughter end.

Will it happen? Of course not. We love our guns. We are addicted to them like the toddler to its pacifier. Furthermore, social acceptability of violence and degradation of compassionate emotions all point to the trait of our current society: We are inherently attracted to violence like the butterfly to the open flame.

Although there are people among us who are compassionate and kind-hearted, they have little influence in a society where the majority is attracted to violent means for their selfish ends. And so the slaughter will continue.
