SHOOTINGS: Time to speak out against guns

Re: “2nd Amendment has long been abused” (letter, 12-15).

I want to thank the writer for his letter regarding the shootings in Connecticut and his thoughts on gun and ammunition control. I found, in his words, a slight sliver of light on this dark day after the tragedy.

I advocate stronger gun-control legislation, but I am not anti-gun, either. I respect the writer’s right to own guns. I found his call for reason very refreshing. His stance on legislation of gun rights is something I find rare in most gun owners.

He states that the Second Amendment has been abused for generations. The majority of that abuse comes from the National Rifle Association. I am dazzled by the high percentage of NRA members who consider themselves Second Amendment scholars, certain they know the intentions of the men who constructed it more than 200 years ago.

The letter writer correctly states that the world is different in so many ways. I wholeheartedly agree. As these massacres happen again and again, there is no longer doubt that something has to be done. This different world needs to change. This is no way to live. Period.

Those who agree should speak out. Loudly. If you disagree, let your voices be heard, too. But for at least a few days, spare us the loud lectures on the Second Amendment, patriotism and freedom. They ring hollow when we think about the 26 innocent lives lost.
