Re: “‘Time bomb’ son shatters family” (TNT, 12-8).

Thank you for the front-page article about the Meline family tragedy. As a mother it is easy to identify with the shock, horror and grief being felt by Kim Meline and her family. She is a courageous woman to speak out about the terrible tragedy, in spite of all she and her family are feeling. People must listen to her, people in the government must listen to her, for she is not alone.

I know little of mental illness, but I do know that she and her husband talked often about the frustration over their son and the seeming lack of caring on the part of the social, medical and mental health professions. All this can’t have happened just to be washed away and forgotten.

There are others in this town, state and country experiencing similar circumstances. A message to all of them is to not let their grief and frustration keep them from speaking out. Kim Meline is speaking out for the husband she expected to spend the rest of her life with and for the son, whom she birthed with joy and then watched become a person to fear.

The headline says it well: “Tacoma mom, prosecutors agree: Mental health system failed; law must be fixed.”
