BUSES: Shame on those who voted against Prop. 1

Those who voted against money for Pierce Transit should ride the bus everywhere for one week. There are many people who ride public transportation for many reasons. Some are: they choose to; they are students; they cannot afford a car; or they have physical, mental and legal reasons.

Pierce Transit is very diligent in determining who can ride shuttles. That requires filling out a six-page application, getting an extensive response from a physician and then having a personal meeting with someone representing Pierce Transit to determine the applicant’s level of ability. Even being in a wheelchair or scooter does not mean all trips will be made by shuttle. Some “trip plans” mean transporting people from home and back to/from a Transit Center where they will then ride the city bus.

The shuttle is prompt in delivering riders to a Transit Center or appointment. The wait to return is often slow. At 78, having to recuperate from triple-bypass surgery, sitting at a Transit Center on a concrete rectangle for more than an hour in wind and rain is not pleasant (or healthy).

The bus shelters do not buffer you from the wind, and it depends on the wind direction how wet or dry you stay. The seats in those shelters are usuallly a heavy metal mesh – very hard to sit on.

Most people who ride the bus and shuttle need it. Shame on those who begrudge them the money they asked for. Thank God I can once again drive.
