Where was The News Tribune when the Tacoma City Council was proposing the license tab fee increase (tax)? The first I read of it was when it was a done deal announced in the Nov. 28 TNT. An online search turns up only a passing reference to the proposal in a Nov. 20 article about the health care systems’ tax exemption.
My search also found that the Edmonds City Council in 2010 had the guts to submit such a fee increase to the voters. There is no requirement under the state bill authorizing fee increases to submit it to the electorate (hence, backdoor taxation with representation).
I know that our city is in dire financial straits. However its citizens need to be informed, educated, persuaded and convinced when it comes to approximately 20 percent fee increases and other pseudo taxation. This is the responsibility of the mayor and council assisted by (and sometimes goaded by) the TNT.
I would like to see a follow-up article allowing council members to go on record with their views. Also, does the fee increase sunset after two years, or will it go on and on? Is it correct that increased fee revenues can only go to road improvements? If so, how do we know they are properly segregated and not mixed with the general fund?
Finally, will road funds allotted from the general fund now be cut as this new source of revenue kicks in?
So go to it, TNT (and council members). Inform, educate, persuade and convince us.
