BUSES: TNT, letter writers missed two key points

All letters published from readers taking the “pro” side of the Pierce Transit revenue increment issue essentially said “public transport service is a good thing,” and a News Tribune endorsement editorial said roughly the same. I doubt that many who voted against Proposition 1 disagreed with that view.

But there were two issues concerning the requested revenue increment that the editorial board and all “pro” letter writers ignored.

• Why was the legal maximum tax increment again being requested, especially in light of the large service reduction (about one-third of bus operating hours) that had recently been put into effect?

• Also, isn’t the real problem a need to replace ineffective Pierce Transit management? Shouldn’t management have been replaced after an explosion at a refueling station damaged or destroyed several buses? If Pierce Transit were a private operator, top management would have been replaced within a fortnight following such a catastrophic accident.

Then, the approach management has taken to requesting additional tax revenue has been extremely amateurish, especially this second time. A tough case had to be made for requesting more revenue immediately after reducing services by about one-third.

I normally have a high regard for News Tribune editorial staff and editorials, but on this issue there was a serious “miss.”
